Speaker ASo your work is so colorful and so furry.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd why fur?
Speaker BYeah, why fur?
Speaker BOkay, so why fur?
Speaker BIt's like, I can give you a philosophical answer one, or I can give you a technical answer two, But I'm gonna give you all of it.
Speaker BSo first of all, fur.
Speaker BI got really interested in fur.
Speaker BJust.
Speaker BI've been sewing since I was a little girl.
Speaker BMy mother taught me to sew on a machine when I was, like, in kindergarten.
Speaker BSo using fabric and textiles has always been a big part of my work.
Speaker BTouch.
Speaker BLooking at textiles, different patterns has always been a big deal.
Speaker BAnd then, you know, I've been sewing for a long time.
Speaker BAnd during the.
Speaker BDuring the pandemic, I was in school, and I decided I hated doing virtual school because, you know, I was.
Speaker BIt was.
Speaker BNot to mention the world was a disaster and it was ending, and so I decided to take a leave of absence, and I was like, I need to get a job.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BAnd so, you know, I got on Chicago Artists Coalition's job board.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BAs one does, and I found a job, and I got hired at a costume shop that specializes in fur suits for the furry fandom.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker BAnd so I rode out the pandemic for one year with the furries on a sewing machine.
Speaker BAnd it was the best people to ride out the pandemic with.
Speaker BLike, we're totally insular.
Speaker BGot deep into furry drama on YouTube.
Speaker BFascinating subculture.
Speaker BBut so during that time, I started collecting all the scraps and remnants that we were, you know, making these suits, tails, ears, whatever with.
Speaker BAnd I just started.
Speaker BI just started.
Speaker BI got a.
Speaker BI just developed.
Speaker BI have a hoard.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BI got a hoard.
Speaker BAnd that.
Speaker BI mean, that was now.
Speaker BI guess that was now four years ago.
Speaker BI still have that.
Speaker BI still got a big pile, as you've seen in my studio.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BIt is overflowing.
Speaker BAnd then now.
Speaker BSince then, I'm also like, you know, that world is interesting.
Speaker BIt's adjacent to the cosplay world.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BC2ET was yesterday.
Speaker BI went.
Speaker BI was refreshed on seeing how many people sew and make their own clothes.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd so I've developed since then.
Speaker BOne of my good friends, she's gone independent.
Speaker BShe has her own costume shop.
Speaker BAnd so I will go and sew for her.
Speaker BAnd she continues to give me scraps of faux fur.
Speaker BSo that's like.
Speaker BThat's, like the technical side of where.
Speaker AI got it from, you know, the furry community.
Speaker AIs that an expensive.
Speaker AIs this is expensive hobby?
Speaker AIt looks like it.
Speaker AI mean, I've seen some of these furry costumes, and they look elaborate.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWell, I can't.
Speaker BI can't speak too much to the, you know, the furry lifestyle.
Speaker BI'm not.
Speaker BI'm not.
Speaker BI am not a furry.
Speaker BI am an ally, I guess.
Speaker AI thought you might see the price tags.
Speaker AOh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker BOh, yeah, those price.
Speaker BI mean, I feel like a suit minimum, 3500 doll.
Speaker BHundred dollars, plus the add ons.
Speaker BWhatever you want, you know.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker BYou want.
Speaker BYou want to get some.
Speaker BYou know.
Speaker BDo you?
Speaker BWell, I'm not going to go into the details.
Speaker BThere's a lot of add ons you can get for extra.
Speaker BA lot of extra money.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BIt'll tack on a few hundred.
Speaker BExtra hundred, but yeah, you.
Speaker BIt.
Speaker BYeah, I guess if you're, if you're, if you are invested.
Speaker BYeah, it's gonna.
Speaker BYou're gonna pay some money.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker AYeah, that's.
Speaker AThat's something.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd the fur itself is pretty expensive too.
Speaker BYou know, like $20 a yard.
Speaker BIt can, it can cost a lot.
Speaker BAnd there's different styles too.
Speaker ASo you've been accumulating this pile of fur for a few years then?
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BYeah, I have too much.
Speaker BI actually, I almost like, I'm almost like.
Speaker BI'm almost.
Speaker BI dare say.
Speaker BI dare say that I might be done with fur soon.
Speaker AWhat?
Speaker BI know, I know, but we all.
Speaker AAre always evolving, right?
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BI might.
Speaker BI'm.
Speaker BYeah, I'm.
Speaker BPart of me wants to sell it off as scraps, but I don't know.
Speaker BI want to.
Speaker BI'm.
Speaker BI miss working with fabric and other materials, so I think I'm going to start incorporating other.
Speaker BI'm really interested in using brocades right now and clear vinyl as a material source.
Speaker AWhat's a brocade?
Speaker BSo it's like this beautiful textile that I can only describe as what it's very like, you know, I got a palace.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BAnd these are the curtains.
Speaker BAnd so.
Speaker BBut it's like a dramatic palace.
Speaker BAnd like, you know, I'm like a countess and I got all these emerald colors, sapphires.
Speaker BIt's very like, it's very.
Speaker BI guess, I don't know.
Speaker BI think it's majestic.
Speaker BIt's a majestic fabric.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AYou use.
Speaker AWhen I also think of your work, it's like majestic mythology, magic.
Speaker AYou know, you have like, maybe like.
Speaker ALet's talk about.
Speaker AYou have like personal mythology.
Speaker BYeah, Yeah.
Speaker BI.
Speaker BI think somebody reminded me of this yesterday, one of our friends, about how I love the sublime and what the concept of that is.
Speaker BAnd I love.
Speaker BI guess I, you know, I don't know.
Speaker BI don't know why I fully make these giant faux fur sculptures other than, you know, I like.
Speaker BI guess I think of them as like my giant friends in my other world, you know, And I make.
Speaker BI make sense of the world through animal and human behavior.
Speaker BVery Observant to that.
Speaker BAnd so through animals, then I get hyper focused in and I'm like, worms.
Speaker BOkay, worms.
Speaker BWhat does it mean?
Speaker BCause sometimes it's easier to think about worms than the horrors of reality.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd so, you know, with worms, then I get deep in.
Speaker BSomebody tells me worms have 10 hearts, you know, and so I'm like, well, worms are all about love.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd then I'm like, well, worms move really slow.
Speaker BAnd so we're inching along and then I started thinking, oh, this is a good metaphor for, you know, what it's like to live in, you know, the late stage capitalist hellscape that we find ourselves in, that we must move slowly and tenderly.
Speaker BAnd, you know, thinking of like, worms live in the dirt, you know, and so we're not all high up in the sky, but we're grounded.
Speaker BAnd then, you know, and then I started thinking, oh, worms travel in a pack, right?
Speaker BAnd so community is important.
Speaker BAnd then, you know, here's.
Speaker BHere we go.
Speaker BHere's my brain moving.
Speaker BAnd then I start thinking, oh, worms come out in the rain.
Speaker BRight, right.
Speaker BAnd so they're like.
Speaker BIn a sense, I think of them as, you know, maybe.
Speaker BI mean, nobody actually knows why worms come out.
Speaker BThe scientists can't figure it out.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BScience cannot figure everything out.
Speaker BThat's my attitude.
Speaker BAnd so I think worms come out in the rain because they like to dance in the rain.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BAnd that's a beautiful symbol, you know.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BSo then I make giant worms, right?
Speaker BAnd I call it.
Speaker BI call it fir gate.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BSo there are two giant worms.
Speaker BIt's archway.
Speaker BYou can enter through fir gate.
Speaker BAnd I call it embrace the worm.
Speaker AYou know, that's so interesting.
Speaker ALike, I didn't know that worms traveled in packs because when they come out in the rain, they're always like separated on the driveway.
Speaker ALike, there's one here, one there.
Speaker AThey're like dancing by themselves.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWell, there's even like this weird phenomenon.
Speaker BI can't remember what the term is, but, like, where they all get wiggled together.
Speaker BI think they sleep together in a giant worm pile and like to stay warm.
Speaker BBut then I think I've heard they can even tangle up and get stuck that way.
Speaker BIt's like, gross.
Speaker BRats can do the same thing with their tongue.
Speaker AOh, yeah, I heard that.
Speaker BRat king.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AYeah, I don't want to go there.
Speaker AAt first I was thinking, like when you were talking about worms, I'm like, you know, maybe it would be nice to be a worm, but I'm not trying to be sleeping and getting tangled up with a bunch of people, it's just not my style.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BNo cuddle puddles, right?
Speaker AAbsolutely not.
Speaker BNo, thank you.
Speaker AAbsolutely not.
Speaker ASo, like.
Speaker AYeah, so you and I are both residents at Chicago Art Department right now, and yeah, your big entryway into the.
Speaker AThe worms, into Furgate, you called it Furgate.
Speaker AAnd then have you thought.
Speaker ASo, like, you're a world builder, right?
Speaker AYou, like, make these worlds.
Speaker AOh, and that's where I want to go.
Speaker AYou've worked in the circus.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ACan you talk about that?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo building worlds.
Speaker BYeah, I mean, I'm an escapist at heart.
Speaker BI love to escape reality.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BWho doesn't?
Speaker BYou know, maybe not everyone does, actually.
Speaker BSome people like reality, but for me, joining the circus, I did that.
Speaker BSo, like, I was like 25.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BSome people, like, I feel like that's like the age.
Speaker BPeople are like, that's when I'm going to get it together.
Speaker BThat's when I'm going to buckle down and get serious in my career.
Speaker BAnd then I'm like, all right, I need to get away.
Speaker BAnd so I'm like, I'm going to join the circus.
Speaker BAnd so I did that for almost three years.
Speaker BIn my 20s, I worked professionally as a chef.
Speaker BI went to culinary school.
Speaker BI like working with my hands.
Speaker BI consider still what I do as an artist very related to working in a kitchen.
Speaker BYou know, working with color, scents, flavor, visually stunning.
Speaker BAnd then like also gathering people together in that way a community event.
Speaker BThinking of your audience, I suppose.
Speaker BBut yeah, so I.
Speaker BYeah, I tried.
Speaker BI traveled with a traditional three ring circus for almost three years, working backstage primarily.
Speaker BAnd so I was not front facing.
Speaker BI didn't.
Speaker BI mean, I saw the audience.
Speaker BI didn't talk to them.
Speaker BI was backstage, I was speaking circus lingo.
Speaker BYou know, we had our own language.
Speaker ASuch as?
Speaker BOh, like, okay, so I worked in the pie car.
Speaker BThat's what they call it.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BPie car is like where.
Speaker BThat's where the food's made.
Speaker BAnd then.
Speaker BOkay, so what's some other things that we would say, you know, in the.
Speaker AFilm, in the film world, if you have to go to the bathroom, you would say 10, one.
Speaker B10 one, yeah.
Speaker ADo you guys have, like, something like that there?
Speaker BOh, God, it's been so.
Speaker BIt's been long.
Speaker BBut yeah, there's all these, like, there's.
Speaker BThere is language in that way, you know, I don't know.
Speaker BThere's like a tradition also, like just on the note of pies, like, if it was your birthday, then someone's going to sneak up and throw a.
Speaker BA shaving cream pie in your face.
Speaker BAnd it's going to be fun.
Speaker AYou know, what if you had your hair braided?
Speaker ALike, if I had my hair braid and you're putting shaving cream in my hair.
Speaker AWere there black girls on the.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWow.
Speaker AAnd they got shaving cream in their hair?
Speaker BYou know, I, I don't remember the logistics.
Speaker AYeah, that went.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ABut, yeah, so that's.
Speaker AWere there animals that you would meet, see in the circus?
Speaker BYeah, there was.
Speaker BI, I, you know, I stayed away from that a lot.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BI will say I did like to hang out with the guys that worked with the lions.
Speaker BYeah, they were fun.
Speaker AYeah, I bet.
Speaker BTough, you know.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BSpicy.
Speaker BLiked to drink alcohol.
Speaker BYou know, having a.
Speaker BWe're having a fire in the train yard out back.
Speaker BIt was quite a lifestyle.
Speaker AThat sounds like quite a lifestyle.
Speaker BI essentially, I felt like a swashbuckler, you know, what's that like?
Speaker BI'm like.
Speaker BI was like a pirate, you know.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BLawless.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd, you know, because we moved every week, we would move to a new state.
Speaker BAnd so we traveled.
Speaker BWe lived and worked and stored our stuff on a private train that we would go around in.
Speaker BAnd so then we would park in train yards all over the country.
Speaker BAnd living in train yards as a lifestyle is, you know, just brings out a roughness in you.
Speaker BAnd also seeing, you know, America through these, like, the eyes of traveling on the rail versus the road saw a lot of the country that was, like, completely untouched.
Speaker BYou know, going through the hills of Appalachia, switch back, like, rounded turns and seeing houses that are in the middle of nowhere, and children would, like, run out and wave at us or, you know, even going through cities.
Speaker BI remember we went through New York City, Manhattan.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BWe traveled in their subway tunnels.
Speaker BAnd so.
Speaker BAnd we, we also.
Speaker BThe other thing about it is that the train had open windows, which is very unusual with, you know, you don't really.
Speaker BI can't do that on the cta.
Speaker BI guess.
Speaker BI guess you could if you go in between the CARs and the CTA.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BBut then that's like a little, you know, that's.
Speaker AThat's dangerous.
Speaker BIt's dangerous.
Speaker BBut ours were more.
Speaker BIt was a.
Speaker BIt was a safer situation.
Speaker BThere's more space.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd so it was, you know, to be able to stick your head out while you're moving, you know, your moving 60 miles per hour through, like, the Mojave Desert was, you know, just incredible.
Speaker ASo with the open, you know, like, if you're riding In a car.
Speaker AAnd you just have your window, your hand hanging out the window, just enjoying.
Speaker ACould you do that?
Speaker ALike, in the train car?
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AIt's amazing.
Speaker AThat's amazing.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOkay, so I have this memory.
Speaker BWe were.
Speaker BOh, God, it was like, the longest we ever spent on a run.
Speaker BWe call it a run.
Speaker BWe were going on the run, and it was from, like, Tampa, Florida, to, like, Northern California, like, Stockton, California, you know, going to these offbeat cities.
Speaker BAnd I remember we were like.
Speaker BIt was like.
Speaker BIt took a week.
Speaker BAnd I was like, after day three is when people would start to, like, go a little, you know, loopy, right?
Speaker BCause we can't get off the train.
Speaker BWe live on the train.
Speaker BPeople are drinking on the train, where, you know, I'm cooking food at 2:00am you know, but having a good time.
Speaker BBut so, like, by day three, people start to lose it.
Speaker BThey go stir crazy, you know.
Speaker BAnd so, yeah, like, so we're through.
Speaker BWe're going through Kansas.
Speaker BIt's like, it's summertime, so it's super hot.
Speaker BAnd then there's just bugs everywhere.
Speaker BLike, just like.
Speaker BAnd so we got the wind.
Speaker AThe window.
Speaker BWe got the windows open.
Speaker BOh, my God.
Speaker BAnd so.
Speaker BBut, like, they're not coming in too much.
Speaker BBut so I remember we.
Speaker BI didn't do this, but I witnessed it.
Speaker BPeople, the kids, the young ones, right?
Speaker BThey're, like, sticking their heads out the window, like, come on.
Speaker BAlso, like, opening their mouth wide.
Speaker AYou are kidding.
Speaker BAnd seeing who could catch the most bugs in their mouth.
Speaker BLike that.
Speaker ABad kids.
Speaker ABad, nasty kids.
Speaker BBad, nasty kids.
Speaker BIt was like a contest.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AUnbelievable.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AWould they.
Speaker AAnd then what?
Speaker AJust spit them out?
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker AYou know what?
Speaker ALet's not go there.
Speaker AThat's just too crazy for me.
Speaker AThat's just too crazy for me.
Speaker ASo then in the circus, when you worked in the back, you have, like, one of your art projects, the Petting Zoo.
Speaker BYeah, I did the Petting Zoo.
Speaker ACan you.
Speaker AFor our listener, can you share a little bit about the Petting Zoo?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo, you know, I think for the Petting Zoo.
Speaker BSo just for context with the Petting Zoo is so, like, I've mentioned before, you know, I work with faux fur, right.
Speaker BI make these big faux fur sculptures.
Speaker BThey're very tactile.
Speaker BAnd then I invite viewers to come and touch them.
Speaker BAnd I've done these setups, installations where I have all my sculptures in one area.
Speaker BAnd then I invite the public to pet, groom, brush, love, hug, whatever, touch the faux fur.
Speaker BLast year, I did the other Art fair with this.
Speaker BAnd I mean, it was just thousands of people coming by, touching them, and I was, you know, it was taking a risk.
Speaker BI was like, good God, what are they gonna do?
Speaker BYou know, drool on it?
Speaker BThey're gonna, you know, lick it.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker ABut it catch bugs on it.
Speaker BCatch bugs on it.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BI've seen some stuff.
Speaker BPeople are disgusting, but it turned out fine.
Speaker BAnd it was great to see people interact.
Speaker BYou know, one of the most common feedbacks I got is how soothing they are when touched.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BHow it kind of relieves anxiety for people.
Speaker BPeople would get so into it.
Speaker BSo calming.
Speaker BBut.
Speaker BYeah, so my idea behind that was, yeah, I'm definitely have this, like, roots and this more like show business, entertainment world and what it's like to, like, have people actually interact with the work.
Speaker BI love live entertainment.
Speaker BAnd, you know, I.
Speaker BFor a long time, and I still have this dream one day when I'm old, I'm an old lady.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BAnd I will.
Speaker BOn a dusty road off the side perhaps of a train yard, Train path, who knows?

Speaker BWhat a group of people, you know, And I was talking to the.
Speaker BSome of them.
Speaker BI was talking to one of my friends who's a therapist, and, you know, we're having this discussion of, like, you know, you talk to other people, and it's like, I don't know.
Speaker BIt's just not the same.
Speaker BIt's like, why do artists and therapists get along?
Speaker BYou know, I'm not the only artist that has.
Speaker BThat likes therapists.
Speaker BAnd so I think it's because we both.
Speaker BWe both work in the realm of feelings and emotions and, like, depth, you know, depth psychology in a sense.
Speaker BYou know, not that I am not a professional.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BI am not.
Speaker BBut I am someone that likes to spelunk, you know, in the depths of my mind in that way.
Speaker AYeah, yeah.
Speaker AAnd, you know, with your mental health.
Speaker AI know, like, your last show, you spoke about or with the topic of mental health, not necessarily yours, but you speak about mad.
Speaker AThe word mad.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AYou know, can you talk about that?
Speaker AI feel like, is that sort of like taking that word back?
Speaker AYou know, folks would be like, are you mad?
Speaker AThey're mad.
Speaker AIt's like a way to call someone, forgive me, but crazy, you know, like, that's not like a word we use and stuff.
Speaker ASo can you talk about, like, your use of the word mad in your work, of mental health, in your artwork?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AWhat a question.

Speaker BSo I started using the word mad and getting involved with mad studies, the notion of madness.
Speaker BI got introduced to it actually, the first time in an art history class on the domestic arts.
Speaker BWho.
Speaker BI don't know why we were talking about it in that class, but that's when I first started hearing about it.
Speaker BOh, that class was pretty disabilities focused.
Speaker BThat's why.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BBut then I got more involved after I heard Matt Beaudet talk, who is the director at the center for Mad Culture here in Chicago.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BThis works out of the Fine Arts Building downtown.
Speaker BAnd, you know, he introduced this idea of.
Speaker BOf, like, the mad identity and what does it mean?
Speaker BHe was speaking from his personal experience, too.
Speaker BAnd I was just, like, so profoundly moved about someone talking openly about mental health and it not being this, like, therapy jargon that, like, we hear now.
Speaker BIt's just like, I don't know.
Speaker BI have a problem with a lot of that just because I feel like it can be used, weaponized against people.
Speaker BBut the idea of madness, mad studies is.
Speaker BIt is a reclaiming term that wants to talk about the strengths of people with mental.
Speaker BI guess I don't like the term mental illness because to me, I'm like, why am I ill?
Speaker BYou know, I have a chronic condition.
Speaker BLike, why do I have to be.
Speaker BWhy am I, like, why am I always, like, quote, sick?
Speaker BAnd instead thinking is like, actually, you know, this is a strength, you know, and can be for myself, you know, I feel like I have a greater capacity for emotions, and it can be a lot to manage the emotions, the highs and the lows, but I find it exhilarating at times.
Speaker BBut I think for me, my interest in the body of work I recently did is I want to understand what madness has looked like throughout history since the beginning of time.
Speaker BBefore, it was all like, oh, you're insane, you're crazy, you go in an insane asylum.
Speaker BLobotomies.
Speaker BI'm interested in what way before that, you know, I got obsessed with this painting called the Stone of Madness by Hieronymus Bosch, My favorite artist ever Renaissance era painter, who also did the Garden of Earthly Delights.
Speaker BIf you know it, look it up.
Speaker BIt is a trip tick, actually, but.
Speaker BBut it's also a trip.
Speaker BIt is a trip.
Speaker BLike, whoa, that guy was like, on another level.
Speaker BIt's wild.
Speaker BBut so another painting he did, the Stone of Madness.
Speaker BSo it was like, this is like a contested Renaissance era belief that people that were mad had rocks in their heads.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BAnd so the cure for it was to remove the rocks.
Speaker BAnd so he did this painting of a quack doctor.
Speaker BIt's a very symbolic painting.
Speaker ALike a rock off the street.

Speaker AAnd how would it have gotten in their head?
Speaker BYou know, I don't know.
Speaker BI don't know.

Speaker BThe weight of knowledge or something.

Speaker BBut so I got obsessed with this idea of having rocks in the head, you know?
Speaker BAnd so I started making this body of work which he.
Speaker BSo it's called the Stone of Madness, but also known as the Stone of Folly.
Speaker BSo, you know, folly, foolishness.

Speaker BAnd like, what does that mean?
Speaker BTo be a mad person and be foolish?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd I was.
Speaker BI was born on April Fool's Day.

Speaker AHe knew what he was doing when he made, you know.

Speaker BOr like, you know, every birthday was kind of a joke, you know.

Speaker BOne of my grade school teachers, like, I brought in cupcakes for my birthday, and she was like, katie, Katie, quit joking around.
Speaker BYou know, it's April Fools.

Speaker BThat legacy of foolishness has stuck with me.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BYou know, it's led to this, you know, my playful, I guess, soft sculptures of.
Speaker BAnd so, you know, I made this series of sculptures that were.
Speaker BThat I were calling my Stones of Folly.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BAnd so, you know, this included collecting pebbles from Lake Michigan.
Speaker BAlso, I used some abandoned ceramics that an art student.
Speaker BI work in higher education, and art students make work, and then they forget about it laying around.
Speaker BSo I grab some of those and then I tattoo them with water decals of different celebrities that celebrities.
Speaker BArtists and musicians that I had gathered from the nami, national alliance of Mental Illness nonprofit.
Speaker BBig cor.
Speaker BBig.
Speaker BI don't want to call them a corporation.
Speaker BBig business that helps people.
Speaker BThey do advocacy work, but then also, like, will help host, like, group therapy sessions, whatever.
Speaker BSo they also had a list on there for, like.
Speaker BIt was like, I was looking at their resources.
Speaker BIt's like a list for 300 different celebrities, artists, musicians that have a former mental illness.
Speaker BAnd so I got, like.
Speaker BSo, like, I was, like, so fascinated because this is.
Speaker BThis is like, building on my idea of, you know, actually having a mental illness is actually a strength.
Speaker BIt can be a superpower as well.
Speaker BAnd so I started collecting different artists, like Dolly Parton, clinical depression.
Speaker BWho knew.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BWho knew Dolly could get sad?
Speaker BYou know, she is.
Speaker BI mean, she.
Speaker BShe actually is the queen of rhinestones and.
Speaker BOh, yeah, bobbles.
Speaker BReally?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BBut so, you know, I made one dedicated to Dolly, you know, Britney Spears, bipolar, postnatal depression.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BShe's another, like, magical, complicated diva, you know?
Speaker BAnd so I started collecting more this idea of different artists in this way that some are looked at, like, so amazing, but then some.
Speaker BThey're complicated.
Speaker BAnd, like, what does that mean, you know, in, like, for example, Richard Simmons, I have his.
Speaker BAs one.
Speaker BAnd, you know, he.
Speaker BHow many people did he heal, you know, in his work?
Speaker BOh, my gosh.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BHe changed his world and the people in it.
Speaker AHe changed the world.

Speaker BYeah, but he suffered from anorexia and it's interesting to think about, like, okay, here's somebody that has touched the center of their own sorrow and then taken that and turned it around and it's used as their strength.
Speaker BAnd so that was my idea behind the work.
Speaker BBut, you know, I don't want to make it so much like, oh, okay, you know, now we're all.
Speaker BIt's a pretty bow.
Speaker BLike, we're not all, you know, it's like, all good.

Speaker ABut I think because folks look.
Speaker ALook to celebrities as people to identify with.
Speaker ASo, like, if you did identify with Britney Spears for, like, whatever reason, you grew up listening to her or whatever, but then to also know this about her, you know, it's just another layer that you may or may not be able to connect with her on.
Speaker AAnd that's always good, you know, just like, for people to also have, like, more role models in a way.
Speaker ANot that necessarily any of these people want to be role models, but, you know, people look for other folks to connect to.
Speaker ASo I think you having that, you know, that list of popular people that folks can identify with, and they'll be like, oh, really?
Speaker ALike, maybe it'll also make them rethink, like, what they think, you know, mental quote, unquote illness is, you know, that it's not like, look at all these stuff that all these people are doing.
Speaker AThey've accomplished so much, you know, while still managing everything.
Speaker ASo that's.

Speaker BAnd so I love this idea of speaking to each other, particularly in a time where censorship is getting worse and worse, especially on social media.
